NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus are again sponsoring the NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE ON Monday December 8 from 9:00 PM thru 1:00 AM. We have been doing this for the last number of years. Eucharistic Adoration and prayers with silent time for private praying is available each hour. With the world so in need of prayers we are encouraging Knights and their wives to take an active part this year by signing up and attending at least one hour of adoration. Sign up sheets are in the vestabules of each church. We would like to see many Kniight and their wives sign up for an hour of adoration. This will let Our Lord and Lady know we are asking for healing in our country.

By promoting Eucharistic Adoration in churches across the country for four hours spanning four time zones we unite the feasts of the Immaculate Connception with the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady whom we claim as the patroness of the unborn is most dear to all who hold life sacred. The hour of unity is 12:00 to 1:00 AM EST. The entire nation will be united in prayer at the hour.

Letter from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

Letter from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson
Dear Brother Knight:

It is probably fair to say that no other single activity has defined the Knights of Columbus over the past half century as much as the pro-life movement.

Following the shock of the Supreme Court's decision to preempt all state and federal laws regulating abortion in Roe v. Wade in 1973, we launched a long-term battle to fight legalized abortion. While achieving the ultimate goal of overturning Roe remains somewhere in the future, we have been able to achieve many small successes along the way:

· the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding for abortions;
· the federal law banning partial birth abortions, which was finally upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in April 2007;
· the "Mexico City Policy," which has barred the use of federal taxpayers' money to pay for abortions in other countries;
· laws in 44 states that preserve a parental role when children under 18 seek abortions;
· laws in 40 states that restrict late-term abortions;
· laws in 46 states that protect the right of conscience for individual health care providers;
· laws in 27 states that protect the right of conscience for institutions;
· laws in 38 states that ban partial birth abortions;
· laws in 33 states that require counseling before having an abortion;
· and laws in 16 states that provide for ultrasounds before an abortion.

All of these restrictions on abortion - all of the progress we've made over the past 35 years in trying to limit and reduce abortions in the United States - would be invalidated with the stroke of a pen if the next Congress passes, and the next president signs, the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA).

Before you cast your vote on Tuesday, please take the time and effort necessary to learn whether candidates for whom you might vote favor or oppose FOCA.

The House sponsors of FOCA are listed here

The Senate sponsors of FOCA are listed here

Obviously, if a candidate in your area is not listed among the sponsors, you may have to ask his or her campaign for their position on FOCA.

We have gathered much additional information about the Freedom of Choice Act, including links to material from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and on life issues generally on a special Knights of Columbus web page:

Remember, all that we've done together since Roe to save the lives of the unborn is at stake. Please pass on this message to your pro-life friends.

Christopher Columbus & KofC

Knights of Columbus
Council 3989 Florence, Alabama

K of C Shield Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney, curate at St. Mary's parish in New Haven, Conn, the Knights of Columbus was chartered on March 29, 1882, in the State of Connecticut.

As the priest explained to a small group of men at a meeting in the basement of St. Mary's Church in October 1881, his purpose in calling them together was manifold: to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement; to promote closer ties of fraternity among them; and to set up an elementary system of insurance so that the widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in dire financial straits.

The founder and first officers of the fledgling organization chose the name "Knights of Columbus" because they felt that, as a Catholic group, it should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic discoverer of America. This would emphasize that it was Catholics who discovered, explored and colonized the North American continent. At the same time "Knights" would signify that the membership embodied knightly ideals of spirituality and service to Church, country and fellowman.

By the end of 1897 the Order was thoroughly rooted in New England, along the upper Atlantic seaboard and into Canada. Within the next eight years it branched out from Quebec to California, and from Florida to Washington.

From such promising beginnings, Father McGivney's original group has blossomed into an international society for more than 1.5 million Catholic men plus their families, in more than 10,000 councils who have dedicated themselves to the ideals of Columbianism: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practical Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who shall not be less than 18 years of age on their last birthday. A practical Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the Precepts of the Church. Application blanks are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus.

“Can my Mom buy K of C Insurance Now that my Dad Died?”

That is the question I got, just a few weeks ago, from the daughter
of a deceased member. In their case, I had to tell her no. And here is
why.
As a fraternal organization, we have a unique opportunity to assist
the surviving family members of deceased brother Knights who have Knights
of Columbus insurance. For up to one year after the death of our brother
Knight, his widow and dependent children (under 18) may apply for a new
insurance policy or annuity, as long as he was an insurance member. Any
Knights of Columbus policy owned on himself qualifies him as an insurance
member.
It may be that a wife (as in this case) or children may need
additional insurance. Regardless, as a fraternal organization, the law
does not allow us to assist a surviving spouse and children with new
Knights of Columbus insurance unless the Knight was an insurance member. I
had to tell the daughter, no, her mother cannot buy life insurance on
herself from the Knights of Columbus because her father was not an
insurance member.
If the member does not have Knights of Columbus insurance, it would
benefit his family if he became an insurance member. That is quite simple
to do. Any Knights of Columbus life insurance, annuity or Long-Term Care
insurance purchase, will make a Knight an insurance member.
One strategy is to make a one time minimal deposit of $300 into an
annuity, IRA or Roth IRA. You’re guaranteed to earn interest on your
investment while opening many doors for your survivors to do additional
planning with the Knights of Columbus in the event of an untimely death.
Why wouldn’t a Knight want his wife and children to have access to one of
the best financial service programs in the world? Being an insurance
member opens up numerous possibilities.
You can count on the Knights of Columbus to provide unparalleled
service to the widows and children of a deceased brother. We are limited,
though, in what we can do if the member is not an insurance member. The
death of a loved one is an emotionally devastating event. Your Knights of
Columbus field agent is available, whether the Knight ever has insurance or
not, to be an advocate for your family. He is limited in what he can do
however, if the member does not become an insurance member.

RTJ Golf outing Interest

Ok you gophers, I mean golfers (that’s a Caddy Shack slip),

Several of us have talked about getting together for a golf outing for our Council. Bud Ward and I have talked and would like to see if anyone would be up for a trip to RTJ Shoals on Saturday July 26. As your self appointed Council FUN Chairman I continue to look for ways for us to have outings and enjoy fellowship.

Let me know by return e-mail and I’ll get us set up.

Not too much response on the NY trip……let me know if your interested in that also.

NY Yankees Stadium Trip

Brother Baseball Fans,

I have brought up the idea of another baseball trip this fall at our last meeting. This year, so as not to miss out, we are trying to get to Yankee Stadium in it’s final year!! Last year’s trip to Chicago was excellent and a good time was had by all. We had originally planned to go to New York over Labor Day weekend, but it seems that date is in conflict with some of our most loyal travelers. So, now we are proposing going on the weekend of September 13 and 14. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will be in town and this might be a fun series to see. Right now, we are planning to leave the Friday sometime in the afternoon, and go to Saturday and Sundays game at 1:00 pm and leave to come home Sunday night. Cost for the tickets is $65.00 per game, and the plane fare and hotel accommodations will run around $700.00 to $750.00.

I will try to get tickets to the game for everyone, but I need to have firm commitments from at least 8 people by July 25. We have a few New Yorkers in our council who can guide us as to what to do in the Big Apple when we are there.

Please e-mail me or call me to confirm ASAP.

Thanks,

Your Brother Knight,

Tom Wissert
